I never was able to get the engine oil clean in this car for two years with 1000 to 2000 mile oil changes. I developed a leak from I think the passenger side valve cover about a year ago. Not being sure what the leak was I started adding 1 quart Lucas stop leak to every Mobil 1 oil change. Didn't help much. Well, I'm in the middle of a plenum pull now and I have the valve covers off. Oil coke and varnish everywhere. Clumps of oil coke in the valve casings and other places. Wondering how to clean up this engine with it in the vehicle. If I spray it down with PB blaster or carb cleaner and just let it drain out the oil plug then do a couple oil changes after I get it running? What is the best way to clean this mess up with the engine in the car? Wish I had one of those vacuum tubes like they give you at the dentist! I also had a really bad valve tap so I am wondering if the lifter oil ports are clogged per Ash's write up and need to be removed or it will clean itself up with some different oil. The entire PCV system is coked up as well as the EGR pipes. (California car so don't want to do EGR delete). I can use blaster on the parts I can remove but what about the ones I can't. Is PB blaster oil friendly? What caused all this in the first place? The car only has about 85k miles on it. I suppose the mix of Lucas and M-1 syntech didn't help things.
